Current School-Year Programs
The Power of Hope AmeriCorps team in Seattle is currently facilitating two ongoing in-school programs at The Southwest Interagency Academy and at Seattle Girls School. This is the second school-year POH has held programs at these two schools.
SOUTHWEST INTERAGENCY ACADEMY
"Exploring Compassion and Expression"
This program consists of two 8-week sessions during the fall and winter of 2008-2009; with one workshop per week. The school is dedicated to providing a positive educational experience to students who would not otherwise be in school. Students receive art credit for participating in the program.
We meet once a week with students at Southwest Interagency Academy and throughout these sessions, participants explore the topics of compassion, self-expression, and identity. Using various art forms, interactive activities, and discussion, we are working to create a community within their school where all can comfortably discuss their ideas while exploring the program's themes.
SEATTLE GIRLS SCHOOL
"Developing and Exploring Leadership"
This program consists of two 7-week sessions in the fall and winter of 2008-2009, with one workshop per week. SGS is an all-girl private middle school dedicated to female empowerment, education and social justice.
During the fall session, the girls are exploring themes of active listening, working together, self-expression and leadership, and how to employ these skills in their lives.
Leadership is encouraged every step of the way. At each workshop, a pair of girls collaborate to lead the entire group in an activity or art project of their choice. The 7-week session culminates with the whole group of girls designing and facilitating a full workshop almost entirely by themselves.
