About The Surrey Urban Youth Project: SUYP is a FREE arts-based,
youth-driven after school empowerment program for Indigenous,
immigrant, refugee, and "at-risk" youth between the ages of 14 and
18. We use creative expression and urban arts including break dance,
spoken word, visual arts, emceeing, video production and more as
the tools through which we explore the social issues and personal
lived experiences affecting the lives of young people in Surrey. In
combination with arts exploration and expression, we provide
life-skills, leadership and community organizing training. Each
session of SUYP culminates in a community performance showcasing
original art and performance pieces created by participants on
issues and experiences relevant to their lives. Since 2006, SUYP has
filled a crucial gap in accessible arts-engaged social justice
programming, offering a critical after-school space for the
exploration of creativity and skills development unlike any other
program in Surrey.
The
Surrey Urban Youth Project is an at arms-length project of Pacific
Community Resources Society, funded by Vancity, the City of Surrey,
the Hamber Foundation, and the Youth Philanthropy Council of the
Vancouver Foundation

The Purple Thistle Dream Seeds Project
The Purple Thistle is looking for eight artistic young women with
barriers to employment, to hire for a five-month skill-building
intensive.
Do you know ....
A painter in her 20's who needs a break from the service industry to
flush out her portfolio and skill set?
A musician who would benefit from learning grant writing and
elf-care skills?
A teenage finger painter who needs five months to ask herself some
hard questions and really work out her issues?
A functioning but socially stigmatized zine writer who needs a break
from 'The Man'?
We'll pay her to make art and learn related skills for five
months.Unfortunately we can't provide a childcare subsidy (but we
can resource-visit link), and it's only minimum wage. Five days a
week, probably 10 to 4pmish (no later, maybe earlier).
Tell anyone who is interested!
